During recent DIA onsite reviews, monitors have indicated there is concern with fire drills not being completed as required by regulation. Below is a reminder of what is required for assisted living programs.
Fire drills for tenants and staff must be completed bi-monthly (every other month). This would be a minimum of six drills per year. Two drills must be conducted during sleeping hours. NOTE: Sleeping hours would be considered the time most tenants are presumed to be sleeping. It is not expected that drills be conducted between the hours of midnight and 4 a.m. This is an audible drill. Staff and tenants should participate. Drills must be documented. Times of the drills should vary.
In addition, a program should document training for other emergencies such as tornado or evacuation of building. It is recommended a program conduct two tornado drills per year (one in the spring and one in the fall).
It is recommended a program conduct an evacuation drill at least annually.
